English to Swedish Translation Company

When Amazon launched their Swedish website, among its many embarrassing mistakes was the definition of a tie-down strap to hold down cargo in a vehicle. It was localized as knark spännband or drug strap. It seems that many product descriptions were automatically translated by software.

At Andovar, we avoid such errors by relying on professional native speakers to do your translations. As your English to Swedish translation company, we know that only a person can localize your project accurately and with attention to cultural details. Because of his or her life experience, only a human being can recognize translations that don’t make sense. Our translators are also specialists in your industry, so they can make sense of the technical terms and convey your brand message precisely.

To make their job more efficient, our high-quality Swedish translators can take advantage of such premium technology and tools as an advanced Translation Management System and Computer-Assisted Translation Tools (CATs) that are guided by Terminology Translation Management and verified by Quality Assurance (QA).

Translation Tips

Swedish Translation Tips & Challenges

Because both English and Swedish come from the Germanic family of languages, they share many similarities, such as word order. But translating from English to Swedish poses some interesting challenges:

Both English and Swedish use the subject-verb-object order. But it is fairly common in Swedish to move an element from the sentence to the front, followed by the verb and then, the object.
Another order difference is the placement of the article. In English, the article comes before the noun, such as “the dog” or “the cat.” In Swedish, the article comes after the noun so that “the dog” becomes hunden, where hund is “dog” and en is the definite article.
Translating from English to most other languages takes up more space. However, Swedish is different in that it requires up to 10 to 15 percent LESS space. You have to account for this shrinking in your layout and the sizes of User Interface elements.
Swedish has nine vowels: A, E, I, O, U, Y, Å, Ä, and Ö, but at least 17 vowel sounds that depend on the vowel’s location in a word and what letters are around it. Vowels also affect how a K, G, or SK is pronounced after them.

Varieties

Swedish Varieties and Dialects

Although there are several hundred dialects of Swedish, most of which are mutually intelligible. The language is divided into six major groups based on geography: Norrland, Svealand, Gotland, Götaland, South Swedish, and East Swedish (spoken in Finland). The differences between the dialects are gradually diminishing, thanks to modern transportation and mass media. Most of the differences are heard in pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and tone.

The dialect spectrum now runs from standard (rikksvenska or standardsvenska), which developed in the 20th century, to the rural dialect, which has distinct sound and grammatical differences that may make it harder for an outsider to understand. There is also Rinkeby Swedish, which encompasses the varieties spoken by young immigrants in the major cities. These varieties are also called sociolects because their common traits have nothing to do with location but rather with social structure.

Although many languages make a distinction between informal, for use with family and friends, and formal, for business and government, such distinctions have mostly disappeared in Swedish. The informal du for “you” is used in almost any situation, regardless of age, social status, gender, and more. This “you reform” dates back to the late 1960s.

Translators

Professional Swedish Translators

When you need a ride home in Stockholm, you might call for a bulle instead of a taxi. In Västerbotten, your pair of socks are not called strumpor but sockar. And when a grown man is acting childish in Skane, you refer to him as glöttig and not barnslig.

Our professional Swedish translators take dialect differences like these in stride because they’re native to the area that you want to reach. They’re also subject-matter experts whether you’re dealing with automotive engineering or cooking. We thoroughly test their fluency in Swedish and English, their ability to communicate effectively, and their cultural sensitivity.

They must then undergo a thorough onboarding process to meet the high standards of quality, accuracy, and timeliness that are the hallmarks of Andovar. When they’re ready to localize your documents, ecommerce, software, and apps, websites, e-learning, and turnkey multimedia, they can turn to the support of advanced CATs that are stand-alone or built into word processors. They can also rely on termbases, which are electronic glossaries specific to the project.

It’s no wonder that we attract some of the best translation professionals who then work with well-known names in global business. Our client list includes Uber, Spotify, Chevron, Oracle, Nestle, Netsuite, and Symantec.

Voiceover

Professional Swedish Voiceover

The way an English sentence sounds when translated to Swedish depends on the dialect used, among other factors. For example, a speaker from Gothenburg would have a melodic tone that people the world over associate with standard Swedish. However, somebody from Scania, which is the southernmost part of the country, would have a flat tone.

A professional Swedish voiceover would take these and other characteristics into account because our professional translators are native speakers. They are familiar with your target audience, the way they talk, and what cultural details are needed to communicate your message. They are also talented actors with skills in emotional expression, script comprehension, and voice projection. Their performances capture audience attention in streaming services, TV programs, movies, online primary education, advertising, and corporate communications.

International businesses such as Netflix, Cienna, Hilton, and Hyatt, turn to us for voiceovers in games, TV dubbing, employee training, e-learning, documentaries, and corporate narration. We support UN-style recordings, scene-sync or lip-sync dubbing, and corporate narration with creative directors and pronunciation guides. Before we release your project to the viewer, we ensure that the localization achieves the same goals as the original by putting it through language QA.

Websites

Swedish Website Translation Services

automated

The Swedes boast very high proficiency when it comes to speaking English, according to the EF English Proficiency Index. They easily drive on the Internet highway where most of what they see is in English.

And yet, a recent Eurobarometer Report reveals that almost 39 percent of Swedes never use a language other than their own for buying goods and services. Another 43 percent only occasionally stray from their native language. The bottom line is that if you want to reach this market online, you need to take advantage of Andovar’s Swedish website translation services.

Our professional Swedish translators are not only native speakers but Internet specialists as well. They are as comfortable choosing between East or South Swedish as we are in handling Content Management Services (CMS) plugins, APIs, and TMS connectors. Among our CMS tools are WordPress, Shopify, and Magneto. So that your target audience can easily find your website, we also localize Search Engine Optimization (SEO) terms correctly.

Clients as diverse as Amway, Agoda, Qnet, Spotify, and Hatch have turned to Andovar to translate their user interfaces (Uis), knowledge bases, landing pages, corporate websites, content repositories, and ecommerce platforms. They trust that our transcreation efforts create localized websites that are culturally nuanced and technically accurate.

Software

Swedish Software Translation Services

automated

When you come to Andovar for our Swedish software translation services, we do more than convert the text from one language to another. If you approach us before you start your project, we can recommend strategies to make your software easier to localize from the very beginning.

For example, we suggest that you externalize text, such as error messages, buttons, dialog boxes, and menu options into separate resource files. We can then work on translation while you’re engineering the code. This independence avoids one team having to wait for another to finish.

We can offer technical advice because our professional translators are also software experts who specialize in your industry. They know whether to use the East Swedish or Norrland dialects as well as how to deal with UI, help, and other resource files. We verify the accuracy and functionality of our localization through Multidimensional Quality Metric (MQM) QA.

As a result, companies like Microsoft, Netsuite, and Symantec turn to us to internationalize their server-based, cloud-based, or mobile applications. They trust us to take care of not only the software but any related components such as user guides, packaging instructions, and online help.

Games

Swedish Game Translation Services

Square Enix, Gameloft, Netease, Electronic Arts, Line, and PUBG have one thing in common when it comes to localizing their products. They’ve all turned to Andovar for Swedish game translation services with virtual reality (VR), simulations, first-person shooters, simulation sandboxes, and Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs).

Our Swedish game translators also enjoy playing on consoles, desktops, and mobile or handheld devices. They know what your audience wants because they are gamers themselves.

These are just some of the parts of localization that we can handle:

automated

Dialog

We translate the intent and emotion of the original in our recordings, dubbing, and subtitles with cultural nuance and technical accuracy.

automated

User interfaces

Gaming control elements, such as buttons, menus, windows, popups, and tutorials can be internationalized at the text or source level.

automated

Mobile app descriptions

Our goal when translating the information about your game is to maximize organic traffic to increase downloads.

automated

Marketing and advertising

Our native professional translators avoid offensive and embarrassing mistranslations by emphasizing their cultural knowledge.

automated

User reviews

Gamers regard the reviews of other players as more authentic than those produced by critics or your marketing department. We localize these opinions so they’re meaningful to the Swedish market.

Into English

Swedish to English Translation Services

Everyone assumes that the Swedes know English. But they, like everyone else around the world, prefer to receive any foreign materials in Swedish to optimize their understanding. So it must come as a welcome relief to them when you give them materials in Swedish, thanks to the translation services of Andovar.

The only potential issue then is that your suppliers, co-workers, and customers in Sweden may assume that you’re fluent in their language. They’ll then start submitting information and materials to you in Swedish. You can use online translation sites to assist with gisting or getting the main idea of their messages. But if you’re interested in thorough comprehension, you can use the Swedish to English translation services of Andovar.

Our professional translators are native speakers of English who have a passion for and fluency in Swedish. They are also specialists in your niche industry. This enables us to handle localization and back translation of corporate, legal or litigation, financial, medical, or scientific communications. We emphasize technical accuracy, cultural relevance, and preservation of the original message.

Our expertise extends to documents, Over-the-Top (OTT) content, media, websites, and e-learning. If your originals are only available in print, advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) transforms them to digital formats, such as PDF. After the translation is finished, document re-creation puts the translated version into a format that is close to the original.

Subtitles

Swedish Subtitle Translation Services

Adding localized subtitles to your OTT content, streaming services, corporate videos, and YouTube media offers many benefits.

Viewers experience the voices and emotions of the original speakers while understanding what’s being said in the foreign language. It’s also a cost-effective way for you to distribute your media internationally without expensive re-recording of audio. If your subtitles exist in SRT, TTML, VTT, SCC, and other formats, those files can be translated without affecting the original media.

Andovar’s Swedish subtitle translation services have impressed such companies as Netflix, Disney, iflix, and Netease. Because our professional translators are native speakers, they know how to preserve the intent and emotional content of the source speech while using appropriate dialect, slang, and humor. Our goal is to ensure that your Swedish audience experiences the localized version in the same way that your English-speaking viewers would.

We achieve your project objectives by using a variety of tools and platforms to produce templates, captions, and SDHs (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). We deliver results that exceed your expectation by subjecting each step of the process to Quality Control (QC). For example, we make sure that the translated subtitles appear at a speed that matches the speaker to maximize understanding from the viewer.

Documents

Swedish Document Translation Services

If you’re typical of other businesses around the world, you most likely produce marketing brochures, operator guides, service manuals, Standard Operating Procedures, or more every day. Whether in online or printed form, these documents must reach your audience in Sweden. The Swedish document translation services of Andovar are dedicated to making that localization happen efficiently, accurately, and cost-effectively.

Our professional Swedish translators are skilled with Microsoft Office products like Word and Powerpoint, and Illustrator and InDesign by Adobe. If your source material is printed and hand-written, we can conveniently transfer them to a digital format through OCR. We take care of internationalization, editing, layout, and digital publishing. Our localization also extends to graphics, which we can make culturally meaningful to your target market.

Our satisfied customers include Chevron, Minor Group, Siemens, and Transocean. They trust us with their document translation needs because our translators are experts in specific industries as well as native speakers. They instinctively know what technical terms, dialect, and slang to use to make your brand desirable and culturally appropriate to the Swedish market.

Elearning

Swedish E-learning Translation Services

While live instructors have proven to be an effective way to train your employees, suppliers, and customers about your products and services, they require transportation to reach the learners, a dedicated space to teach them, and a schedule that is acceptable to both them and their students. In contrast, e-learning avoids those issues by digitally delivering lessons to any location within minutes and encouraging trainees to learn at their own schedule and pace.

Andovar’s Swedish e-learning translation services offer two main benefits.

Our professional Swedish translators are native speakers who are also fluent in English. They know what localized terms will convey your brand message and be most relevant to your learners. They are also training and education experts who can select the most effective strategies for culturally appropriate lessons, whether that’s through video, voiceovers, text, testing, digital publications, games, software, mobile apps, or other courseware.

We support our training efforts with Learning Management Systems (LMSs) like Articulate, Articulate 360, Lectora, and Captivate. Our turnkey solutions help make our quizzes and presentations SCORM-compliant. To ensure that the results for both Swedish- and English-speaking learners are the same, we verify them through integration testing. Our services have garnered the loyalty of companies like Docebo, Learnship, Cegos, and Learning.com.

Facts

Swedish Language Facts

Sweden has a population of 10.35 million as of 2020, and nearly all of its inhabitants consider Swedish their native language, even though it wasn’t made official until 2009. The language is also an official language of Finland, although only 5.5 percent of the people in that country are native speakers. In the Finnish province of Aland, Swedish is the only official language and the native language of most of the people there. Outside of Sweden and Finland, around 40,000 students are learning Swedish as a second language.

automated
As of January 2021, about 98 percent of the Swedes have Internet access, due in part to the country’s extensive investment in the infrastructure of the web. Just over 82 percent of the people are social media users. The number of mobile connections is equal to 141.6 percent of the population because many people have more than one mobile connection.
Because Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian share a common history, all languages are mutually intelligible. Learning Swedish, it is said, is like learning three languages. All three languages are descended from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. One of the primary challenges to mutual comprehension are the varying pronunciations.
Swedish uses family words based on maternal and paternal lines. The word mor for mother and far for father appear in grandmother as mormor (mother’s mother) and farmor (father’s mother). Grandfather is either morfar (mother’s father) or farfar (father’s father).
